Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is gearing up for a return to the field after a concussion kept him sidelined for multiple weeks. Head coach Mike McDaniel confirmed to reporters on Monday that the team has designated Tagovailoa to return from injured reserve, as reported by ESPN.
While Tagovailoa still needs to navigate through concussion protocol to be cleared for their Week 8 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones mentioned that the quarterback will practice with the team on Wednesday.
This upcoming Week 8 game against the Cardinals represents the earliest opportunity for Tagovailoa to make his return from injured reserve, as the Dolphins open a 21-day practice window for him.
“I’ve been symptom-free since the next day [after the concussion],” Tagovailoa shared, revealing that he received advice from experts recommending extended rest. He expressed gratitude towards the Dolphins for placing him on injured reserve, acknowledging that it was a decision made with his best interest at heart.
The 26-year-old signal-caller sustained his fourth documented concussion in five years during the Dolphins’ Week 2 clash with the Buffalo Bills. The collision with Bills safety Damar Hamlin while trying to secure a first down led to Tagovailoa displaying symptoms of a concussion, resulting in his exit from the game and entrance into concussion protocol.
During his time on injured reserve, Tagovailoa underwent evaluations with neurologists amidst concerns about his long-term well-being due to his history with concussions. Speculation swirled about the quarterback’s future in the sport, with questions emerging about a possible retirement decision. However, the former first-round pick reportedly had a desire to keep playing.
Throughout Tagovailoa’s recovery journey, Coach McDaniel maintained a measured approach regarding a potential return timeline. It wasn’t until last week that he publicly acknowledged his expectation for Tagovailoa to make a comeback this season.
“I wasn’t paying attention to any of it,” Tagovailoa responded when asked about the external noise suggesting retirement. “None of it.”
In light of his injury history, Tagovailoa was prompted to contemplate whether adjustments to his playing style would be necessary moving forward. The quarterback’s resilience and determination to get back on the field appear unwavering, as he sets his sights on returning to game action for the Dolphins.
