In a surprising move, the Pittsburgh Steelers have reportedly chosen Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback for their upcoming Week 7 game against the New York Jets. Although coach Mike Tomlin has yet to make an official announcement, CBS NFL insider Jonathan Jones has confirmed that Wilson is expected to get the nod over Justin Fields, who has started every game this season.
Wilson, who has been sidelined with a calf injury, is finally ready to make his debut for the Steelers. He took first-team reps this week, with Fields stepping into the secondary role. Despite both quarterbacks being expected to see playing time, Wilson is anticipated to take the majority of the snaps, according to NFL Network.
Fields has been instrumental in leading the team to a 4-2 record, but the Steelers are now turning to Wilson, their original plan for a starting QB when they signed him this offseason after his release from the Broncos.
Wide receiver George Pickens may have inadvertently disclosed the starting quarterback when he mentioned on Friday that he and Wilson have been working on their chemistry, throwing more passes after practice in preparation for Wilson’s first start.
Fields has had a solid season so far, throwing for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and only one interception. He has also been a dual threat with 231 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.
It will certainly be interesting to see how Wilson performs in his debut with the Steelers and how the team will fare with him under center. Stay tuned for the official announcement from Coach Tomlin as the Steelers prepare to take on the Jets in what promises to be an exciting matchup in Week 7 of the NFL season.
