The New York Giants were eager to test themselves against the physicality of the Detroit Lions in joint training camp practices. However, things got a little out of hand, as the NFL slapped both teams with a $200,000 fine each for the multiple fights that erupted during the practices.
According to NFL Media, “All NFL clubs were reminded in a memo sent last month that fighting and unprofessional conduct at joint practices would not be tolerated.”
The confrontations started early during the first joint practice in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Tempers flared and big names on both teams got into it during drills. A scuffle broke out between Lions wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams and Giants defensive backs Andru Phillips and Dane Belton. Players from both sides joined the fray, with punches being thrown in the chaos.
Another altercation ensued during an offensive play by the Giants. A tussle between blockers led to New York guard Greg Van Roten pushing a Lions lineman. Even quarterback Daniel Jones got involved, shoving a Detroit defender before coaches intervened.
Despite wearing a non-contact jersey, Jones found himself on the receiving end of a hit, which didn’t sit well with Giants coach Brian Daboll.
More pushing and shoving occurred towards the end of practice, but it was quickly diffused, with Giants stars Dexter Lawrence and Brian Burns stepping in to calm things down.
After a tumultuous session, practice finally came to an end.
