In the world of American football, there are certain players who rise above the rest, reaching for the stars and etching their names into the annals of history. One such superstar quarterback who has left an indelible mark on the game is Joe Namath.
Among Namath’s numerous memorable moments, one in particular reigns supreme. That moment being when Namath predicted they would win that Super Bowl despite being double digit underdogs. Namath famously proclaimed:
“I guarantee it.”
The boldness and confidence in Namath’s words captivated the nation, and he delivered on his promise, solidifying his place as a legend in the sport.
But perhaps there is a new quarterback ready to follow in Namath’s footsteps. In fact, according to quarterback Aaron Rodgers, that is the goal and, much like Namath, he’s willing to say that goal publicly.
Rodgers, in an article by Steve Serby of the NY Post, expanded on his thoughts, explaining that he viewed the Jets as one of a select few teams that were capable of meeting that lofty challenge.
The quarterback also waxed poetic about the quality of the roster, saying:
“We have the talent, the drive, and the determination to make a real run at the Super Bowl. I believe in this team.”
By no means is stating a goal like Rodgers did as heavy-handed as predicting a victory like Namath did, but it’s nice to see a team that clearly believes in itself enough to state that so publicly. Now Jets fans just have to hope that optimism is warranted and results in some clearly plus play this season.
As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on Rodgers and the Jets, waiting to see if they can back up their words with actions and fulfill their lofty aspirations. Only time will tell if history will repeat itself and another superstar quarterback will reach for the stars.
