In the upcoming 2024 season, the Denver Broncos are facing a significant change in their offensive line, particularly at the center position. With Lloyd Cushenberry’s departure to the Tennessee Titans in free agency, the Broncos are left with uncertainty as to who will step up and fill his shoes.
The rest of the offensive line seems set with Garett Bolles at left tackle, Ben Powers at left guard, Quinn Meinerz at right guard, and Mike McGlinchey at right tackle. This unit is known for being one of the highest-paid in the National Football League, but the question mark remains at center.
Head coach Payton addressed the situation, stating, “There’s no etched in stone right now at that position.” He mentioned that both center contenders, Alex Forsyth and Wattenberg, have been showing promise during camp. Forsyth has been taking reps at both center and guard, displaying his versatility and adaptability.
Wattenberg, a fifth-round pick from the 2022 NFL Draft, has been praised for his football IQ and versatility. Although he has limited starting experience, his potential to excel in the center position is evident. Payton expressed his confidence in Wattenberg’s abilities, pointing out his intelligence, versatility, and strength in handling the pass rush.
Furthermore, Payton highlighted the importance of a center’s ability to maneuver at the second level and finish off blocks. Wattenberg’s athleticism and adeptness in reaching second-level blocks make him a strong contender for the starting role.
If Wattenberg can showcase improvements in his strength and technique, he stands a good chance of securing the starting center position for the Broncos. This would not only solidify the offensive line for the upcoming season but also provide a much-needed boost for the underwhelming 2022 draft class.
