In a stunning move, the Los Angeles Chargers have bid farewell to both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, leaving a significant void in the wide receiver room. With the departure of these two top receivers, the question on everyone’s mind is – who will step up to fill the coveted “X” receiver role?

The “X” receiver position is of utmost importance in any team’s offense. This spot is typically the primary target for quarterbacks, often drawing double teams and requiring exceptional skills to come down with tough catches. Players like CeeDee Lamb and the legendary Andre Johnson exemplify the prototypical “X” receiver – versatile playmakers who can make big plays when it matters most.

The Chargers had a plethora of options when it came to their receiving corps, giving them flexibility in how they lined up their players. However, with Allen and Williams no longer in the picture, the spotlight now falls on the next man up.

Enter Ladd McConkey, the Chargers’ second-round pick in 2024. While McConkey is highly regarded by fans and the coaching staff alike, his skill set positions him more as a slot or “Z” receiver rather than a traditional “X” receiver. Known for his speed and route running abilities, McConkey is expected to be a dynamic playmaker for the Chargers’ offense, but not necessarily in the “X” role.

As we look beyond McConkey, other receivers on the Chargers roster like Cornelius Johnson, Simi Fehoko, and UDFA Leon Johnson have the potential to fill the “X” receiver position. However, barring any unforeseen circumstances, it is unlikely that they will secure the starting role. Cornelius Johnson, in particular, is poised to be the primary backup and may be called upon in case of injury.

Josh Palmer, another promising talent on the Chargers’ roster, offers versatility at all three receiver positions. While his health history raises concerns, Palmer’s undeniable talent makes a strong case for him to take over the “X” receiver role if needed.

In a surprising turn of events, Quentin Johnston, the Chargers’ first-round selection in 2023, faces a make-or-break sophomore season. Despite his imposing size and athleticism, Johnston’s fit at the “X” receiver spot remains questionable. His struggles at the position in his rookie year have raised doubts about his ability to excel in that role going forward.

With the departure of key veterans and the emergence of young talent, the Chargers’ receiving corps faces a period of transition. The battle for the coveted “X” receiver position is on, with a mix of seasoned players and rising stars vying for their chance to shine. Only time will tell who will rise to the occasion and become the next standout “X” receiver for the Los Angeles Chargers. Stay tuned as the drama unfolds in the coming season.
