In a disappointing turn of events, Kirk Cousins had a rough outing on the field, leading to the rookie, Penix, getting some playing time. The game against the Falcons was a tough one for Cousins, as he had a fumble and two interceptions that were less than ideal. However, it seemed like a necessary move for the Falcons to pull Cousins from the game and give Penix a chance to gain some experience as the 2024 eighth overall pick.
Head coach Raheem Morris explained the decision to swap Penix in for Cousins, stating, “At that point, the game was out of hand. It was gone. So we were able to sub all those guys and get them out. Made the mistake of putting Bijan Robinson in one play. Got him out of there and made sure we could substitute as many people as we could at that moment.”
Despite the rough outing, there doesn’t seem to be any quarterback controversy brewing in Atlanta. It is clear that Kirk Cousins will remain the starter moving forward. While today was a tough day for the veteran quarterback, it is unlikely to impact his status as the starter, unless a pattern emerges or something drastically changes.
Looking ahead, one can only hope that Penix’s next appearance on the field is in a more positive scenario, possibly during a blowout in favor of the Falcons. As for now, the focus remains on Cousins regrouping and bouncing back from a tough game.
