In the world of American football, the role of NFL kickers has never been more crucial. With their exceptional skill and accuracy, these players are making more field goal attempts from 50 yards or more than ever before. However, despite their success, there have been discussions about potentially narrowing the goalposts to increase the difficulty of making kicks. But according to sources at CBS Sports, there have been no serious talks within the NFL about changing the width of the goalposts.
When questioned about the possibility of narrowing the goalposts, NFL EVP Jeff Miller responded, “There’s no pending rule change on the matter, but the competition committee for sure is going to take a look at it and we’ll follow the data as the season goes on and continue to track it.” While this statement was not a direct refusal, sources indicate that the idea is not currently on the table.
In the NFL, there is currently 18 feet and 6 inches between the uprights, the same distance as in college football. The 2024 NFL season has witnessed the second-highest number of field goals made in a season, with a record-breaking number of successful kicks from 50 yards or more. The impressive 85.6% overall make rate ranks sixth-highest since 2000, while the 74.8% success rate on kicks from 50 yards or more is unprecedented.
An astounding 77 kicks of 50 yards or more have already been made this season, surpassing the previous year’s total at this point in the season by 14. In the past, the average number of field goals made from 50 yards or more in the first six weeks of a season was less than 28, but in recent years, that number has skyrocketed to an average of 67.
The exceptional performance of kickers has had a profound impact on the NFL as a whole. The league currently boasts an average of 44.9 points per game, the highest at this point in the season since 2021. Coaches are now more inclined to go for it on fourth downs, with as many opting to do so in fourth-and-3 situations as in fourth-and-1 scenarios just a few years ago.
Furthermore, kickers are helping to prolong drives and expedite the pace of the game, as they contribute to the decline of punting. Their accuracy and reliability have become key components in the evolution of American football.
