The buzz surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback situation has been at an all-time high since Justin Fields stepped in for the injured Russell Wilson during training camp. Wilson’s calf injury prior to Week 1 opened the door once again for Fields, who has led the Steelers to an impressive 3-0 start, their best since 2020.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin made it official on Tuesday, declaring that Fields will get the start in Sunday’s road game against the Indianapolis Colts. After meeting with trainers and Wilson throughout the week, it was determined that Wilson would not be a full participant in practice leading up to the game.
Tomlin explained his decision to keep Fields as the starter, stating, “‘when Russ gets to an appropriate level of health,’ he said, via CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones.”
Fields is coming off of his most impressive performance to date in a Steelers uniform. In their recent 20-10 victory over the Chargers, Fields completed 25 of 32 passes for 245 yards, including a touchdown run and a game-clinching 55-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Calvin Austin III.
In his three starts, Fields has an impressive completion percentage of 73.3% and has only turned the ball over once. His consistent play has been a perfect complement to the Steelers’ defense, which has only allowed 26 points through three games.
“It’s definitely a blessing being here,” Fields expressed before the win over the Chargers. “I was happy to come to an organization like this, and I couldn’t be happier now. I’m just glad to get the opportunity to go out there Sunday onto the field and hope to come out with a few more wins.”
Despite not playing in a regular-season game yet, Wilson has been actively engaged in supporting Fields and his teammates on game days. Wilson, who was named a team captain in the summer, has been a guiding force for Fields, praising him for his talent, work ethic, and intelligence.
On Sunday, the Steelers offense led by Fields will face off against a struggling Colts defense that has struggled to stop the run, convert on third downs, and secure the red zone. It’s clear that for now, the Steelers belong to Fields, until Tomlin says otherwise.
