In a stunning defensive performance, Kansas City managed to stifle Atlanta’s rushing attack to their lowest total of the season. The front seven of the Chiefs was simply dominant, but it was the strategy employed by defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo that truly stood out. Utilizing a combination of three linebackers and nickel defensive back Chamarri Conner, the Chiefs were able to completely change the game.
One tactic that Kansas City effectively used was shifting to odd fronts against the Falcons’ wide zone scheme. By deploying five defensive linemen on the line of scrimmage, the Chiefs were able to disrupt the offensive double teams and prevent the offensive linemen from climbing to the second level. This strategy allowed the linebackers to roam freely and have one-on-one tackle opportunities while still maintaining two safeties deep in coverage.
Against Atlanta, the Chiefs showed creativity by placing linebackers Drue Tranquill and Leo Chenal on the edges instead of using an additional defensive tackle. This decision added more speed to the defense, providing greater versatility in coverage and allowing for potential blitzes from the outside. Tranquill and Chenal were able to effectively set the edge against the Falcons, rendering their early-down efficiency virtually non-existent.
Although the odd front was successful, Kansas City occasionally reverted to their standard nickel front with four defensive linemen. Even in these situations, the Chiefs were able to contain the Falcons’ perimeter running game thanks to the exceptional play of players like Chamarri Conner. Conner, in particular, excelled against Atlanta’s rushing attack, using his physicality to neutralize tight ends and force runs inside.
Chamarri Conner’s performance did not go unnoticed, as he demonstrated his ability to defend the run even from the nickel position. In a league where nickel backs are often smaller and more finesse-oriented, Conner’s physicality and skill set set him apart. His contributions to the Chiefs’ defense cannot be overstated, as he proved to be a pivotal player in their dominant display against Atlanta.
