The seasoned quarterback continues to hold the top position on the quarterback depth chart, however, the pressure is steadily increasing.
Throughout the summer, Brissett has consistently been the first man up in practice drills and preseason games. But, the first-round rookie Drake Maye has been making a strong case for himself. The third overall pick in this year’s draft has been putting together solid performances and earning more reps with the top-level talent on the offensive side of the ball.
“Every day I come out here I’m trying to do my best. It doesn’t matter if it was Day 1 or Day 39, I’m still going out there trying to do my best,” Brissett shared with reporters after training camp practice No. 17. “I don’t really worry about the competition, I more so worry about myself and being a good teammate.”
Having been a third-round pick by the Patriots in the 2016 NFL Draft, Brissett re-joined the team earlier this offseason as part of their efforts to revamp the quarterback room. The team later added Maye in the first round of the draft, along with Joe Milton in the sixth round.
Throughout the summer, Brissett, Maye, Milton, and Zappe have shared quarterback duties. However, Brissett and Maye have consistently been ahead of Milton and Zappe in the pecking order.
As a result, the competition for the starting spot has come down to Brissett and Maye. For now, Brissett continues to approach each day as if he is the starter.
“I still treat myself as if I’m the starter,” he affirmed.
“I just go out there and do my job. I’ve been in this league long enough. A lot of crazy things have happened in my career so far and I wouldn’t be shocked by anything. But at the same time, I’m enjoying this process, putting my best foot forward, and letting the chips fall where they may.”
