In a stunning turn of events, Eric Gray, the second-year back for the New York Giants, had a breakout performance in a preseason game against the Detroit Lions. This performance came at a crucial time for Gray, as he had been facing tough competition from Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Dante Miller for snaps behind starting running back Devin Singletary.
Gray, who had been feeling the pressure after a disappointing rookie season, emphasized the need to “get back to being Eric Gray.” In a recent interview, Gray reflected on his mindset, stating, “I think last year I had to get to myself where I was like it’s just football at the end of the day. Whether it’s punt return, whether it’s kick return, whether it’s offense, whatever it is, it’s just football at the end of the day.”
The young running back continued, “So this year I’ve kind of been focusing on just being Eric Gray. Being Eric Gray and focusing on football is the same thing I’ve been doing since I was four years old.” This mentality seemed to pay off for Gray on Thursday night as he delivered a stellar performance on the field.
Reflecting on his performance, Gray stated, “I just wanted to put my best foot forward. Like I said, I just want to be Eric Gray; just be me. Last year, I kind of made football more than it is. It’s just football at the end of the day. Just being me.”
Interestingly, all three of the young running backs vying for roles behind Singletary showed promise in the game. This competition is sure to keep things interesting as the Giants continue to evaluate their roster and make tough decisions heading into the regular season.
