OXNARD, California – The NFL world was abuzz with the latest developments out of Dallas on Thursday, as Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones made headlines with his comments regarding star receiver CeeDee Lamb’s contract situation.
Following a joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams, Jones dropped a bombshell by admitting he did not feel any urgency to re-sign the 2023 NFL receptions leader, who is currently holding out for a new deal. In a puzzling statement, Jones failed to provide a clear explanation for his lack of concern, simply stating, “take any reason you want.”
Lamb, clearly displeased with Jones’ remarks, took to Twitter with a cryptic “lol” and even went as far as removing the phrase “America’s Team” from his bio. However, Jones’ son and Cowboys COO, Stephen Jones, had a different take on the matter.
In an interview on “The Doomsday Podcast,” Stephen Jones expressed his confidence in reaching extensions for Lamb, star quarterback Dak Prescott, and standout edge rusher Micah Parsons. “We plan on doing it. We want all three players here. We have the best chance of winning a championship by having them on our roster,” Jones stated emphatically.
While Stephen Jones exuded optimism regarding Lamb, his comments on Prescott’s impending extension raised some eyebrows. He framed the negotiation as a partnership rather than a situation where the team must pay a premium to retain their franchise quarterback.
“We look at it like Dak’s our partner in this. We’re trying to win a championship. No one wants to win more than Dak Prescott,” Jones asserted.
However, the reality is that Prescott holds all the cards in this negotiation. With a no-trade clause and a no-franchise tag clause in his contract, Prescott has the leverage to command top dollar on the open market if the Cowboys do not meet his demands by next March.
If a deal is not reached, Prescott could potentially become the highest-paid player in NFL history, with suitors lining up to offer him a massive contract. The ball is in the Cowboys’ court to secure their star quarterback’s future in Dallas before it’s too late.
