In his first week of padded practices with the New England Patriots, rookie quarterback Drake Maye faced some challenges but also showed promising signs of growth.
Facing tough third-and-long situations, Maye impressed his teammates and coaches with his resilience and determination. Backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett praised Maye’s work ethic and encouraged him to stay focused and keep improving.
“Keep going man,” Brissett said to reporters. “It’s a long training camp. I think the best thing that he’s doing is putting one foot in front of the other. Going back out there and going out there competing. The plays are going to make themselves. It’s just about doing the little things day in and day out that’s gonna give you a chance to make the right play.”
Despite some initial struggles, Maye bounced back with a strong practice on Thursday, showcasing his skills with impressive throws and smart decision-making on the field.
“Just learn from it. Just not making the same mistake over and over,” Maye said. “I think as training camp goes on — as a rookie in here, just trying to get better each and every day. Our defense does a good job over and over of making it tough. For me, I’m just trying to make the right plays.”
During Friday’s full padded session, Maye continued to impress with his accuracy and field vision. He connected on back-to-back touchdown passes to his receivers, showing his ability to read the defense and deliver the ball with precision.
While Maye’s physical tools have been on display, he remains focused on the finer details of the quarterback position. Working closely with quarterback coach T.C. McCartney, Maye is dedicated to perfecting his footwork, timing, and decision-making on the field.
“I think the biggest thing is just timing up my feet with the concepts,” Maye explained. “Coach T.C. [McCartney] does a great job of reminding us on each play what our footwork is. And I think it really helps with timing, being on time, getting my eyes on the right spot, moving defenders. All that stuff is really important playing quarterback.”
As Maye continues to progress through training camp, his development as a quarterback is closely monitored by his coaches and teammates. With his strong work ethic and determination, Maye is poised to make a positive impact on the Patriots’ offense in the upcoming season.
