The Denver Broncos made significant upgrades to their defensive line this offseason, bolstering their trenches with the acquisitions of John Franklin-Myers and Malcolm Roach. With the addition of Zach Allen and D.J. Jones, the unit is expected to make a big impact in 2024.
One of the under-the-radar moves the Broncos made was trading for John Franklin-Myers during Day 3 of the 2024 NFL Draft. Franklin-Myers brings a wealth of experience and versatility to the team, filling a crucial need on the defensive front. His fierce demeanor is sure to benefit him and his teammates on game days.
Having started every game for the New York Jets over the past three seasons, Franklin-Myers has garnered praise from Pro Football Focus for his consistent performance. Head Coach Sean Payton lauded the sixth-year pro after a recent padded practice, highlighting his physicality and disruptive play.
“He is a player if you study his history, his production is very consistent year in and year out what he’s done. Generally speaking, what we saw was the physicality of how he plays,” remarked Payton.
Franklin-Myers’ ability to disrupt the pocket will be a valuable asset for the Broncos, who lacked playmakers on the defensive line last season. Zach Allen, who had a standout first season in Denver under Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph, has formed a strong bond with Franklin-Myers. The two are constantly pushing each other to improve and become a dominant duo on the defensive front.
“I think Zach has an interesting point of view when it comes to the game. Hearing how he looks at things and his get off is something that over the last week or so I’ve been asking, ‘What are you looking at? What are you seeing? What are you keying?’” said Franklin-Myers.
In addition to Allen, Franklin-Myers has been impressed with free agent addition Malcolm Roach. Roach has been instrumental in teaching Franklin-Myers the finer points of run defense and bringing a contagious energy to the position group. His passion for the game has reenergized the defense as they prepare for the upcoming season.
