In a surprising move, WR Malik Turner has been signed to the active roster by the San Francisco 49ers. This marks a new chapter for Turner, who has been in the NFL for five years and has previously played with teams such as the Seattle Seahawks, Dallas Cowboys, Las Vegas Raiders, and Houston Texans. Turner also spent time in training camp with the Indianapolis Colts in 2023 before joining the Niners.
“It was something I knew could be a possibility. I was hoping that he would be here but I knew it could be a possibility. I feel pretty confident it’ll all work out in the long run. And he’ll be here and we’ll get on the same page with everything. But it’s just one day of practice. And I think Trent will be alright missing a few practices,” Turner expressed about joining the 49ers.
The 49ers seem unfazed by Trent Williams’ contract situation, as the top left tackle in the NFL is reportedly seeking a new deal despite having three years remaining on his current contract. Williams, who is already among the highest-paid left tackles in the league, is set to earn $20.8 million in 2024, $23.25 million in 2025, and a whopping $32.96 million in 2026. However, none of these figures are guaranteed.
Despite his desire for a new contract, Williams may not have much leverage unless he is willing to sit out for an extended period of time. It is worth mentioning that Williams has held out for a season in the past during his time with the Washington Football Team, but his relationship with that organization was much more strained.
The addition of Malik Turner to the roster adds depth and competition at the wide receiver position for the 49ers, as they continue to navigate through the offseason and prepare for the upcoming campaign. It remains to be seen how Turner will fit into the team’s plans moving forward, but his experience and skill set could prove valuable as they strive for success in the competitive NFC West division.
